Joanne Lunn @ Exsultate Jubilate
This concert on Saturday, 16 March 2024 @ 7:30 is gorgeously varied. Local star now international soprano, Joanne Lunn, opens with Mozart’s fizzing Exsultate Jubilate. Together, choir and Joanne perform Mozart’s sumptuous Laudate Dominum; and Song of Songs by Patrick Hawes, which explore connections between erotic love and spirituality. Hawes is a composer in residence with Classic FM.
The choir’s major work is Scarlatti’s plangent Stabat Mater. It divides into 10 parts to perform this marvellous work of polyphony: each part singing the tune at a different time or in a different, in marvellously moving polyphony. Brittanica tells us polyphony is the outstanding characteristic that differentiates Western art music from the music of all other cultures. Sections conclude with a perfect and satisfying coalescence.
#Joanne Lunn is one of Britain’s leading Baroque sopranos, in great demand across the world. She works regularly with Bach Collegium Japan (Suzuki); Dunedin Consort (Butt); Concerto Copenhagen (Mortensen); Ensemble Pygmalion (Pichon); and Tafelmusik, Toronto. Originally from Leicester, Joanne is also LBC’s extremely supportive President.
The Bach Camerata String Ensemble accompany the singing.
On Saturday March 16th, we present our Spring Exsultate Jubilate Concert where we are joined by our President, stella international baroque soprano, Joanne Lunn.
The performance opens with the 18th century composer Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater, depicting Mary sorrowing at the foot of the cross: a beautifully expressive and richly textured work in 10 parts, gloriously enhanced by the wonderful acoustic of St James the Greater Church.
Then come two much loved works by Mozart starting with the irrepressible energy and serenity of his Exsulatate Jubilate and Joanne’s amazing coloratura passages in the stunning final Hallelujah.
The journey continues with Mozart’s tranquil Laudate Dominum, via Mendelssohn, through to the 21st Century for three from Patrick Hawes’ Song of Songs exploring the relationship of romantic and erotic love to spirituality. The evening culminates in the glorious Jerusalem from Gallia by Gounod which should rattle the rafters!
The talented members of the Bach Camerata String Ensemble led by Shula Oliver will be accompanying. Previous audience members may remember Shula’s exquisite rendering of VW’s The Lark Ascending in 2022.
Finally, Richard Laing, our conductor, will be there sprinkling his magic to achieve a performance to match our last concert.

“The Leicester Bach Choir’s performance of Handel’s Messiah on 9 December was a triumph – combining passion, intensity, pace and an exquisite interplay of voices within the choir and with the excellent soloists. It provoked a deserved and extended standing ovation from a full hall. This is an excellent choir at the peak of its powers.” Sir Alan Tuckett
